As I bundled up in all my camo, I grabbed a photo of my step dad, kissed it, put it in my overall pocket, and thought I’m gonna get one for you!
My husband and I got to the tree stand and quietly sat listening to the surroundings until daylight came. After 4 hours of seeing nothing but squirrels, jon nudges me, points and there it was! A big buck coming down the hill behind us. I slowly turn in the stand backwards, raise my gun... Jon, I can’t see it! Here, he said trade me! I took his 50 cal looked through the scope....and before he could say shoot when yo....BAMM! Down it went! First words out of my mouth were F YA! My husband hugged me and we look up and the deer takes off...and as he runs we noticed he only had one side of a rack.
We get down and walk to the blood site. Huge blood puddle and there it laid the whole left side of the rack. When the deer fell, it rolled on a creek bank side and broke the rack off and the left brow tine was gone. We followed the blood trail while I carried 6 points with me! Along the way we spooked the deer....it ran. Wow how is this happening I thought? So we leave and get something to eat and let it die, if it was going to.
Came back and we followed the trail, then it just stopped. No more blood, no sign of it any where! We searched and searched! My heart is pounding! I started feeling very sad. I went from the happiest person to just a lost-empty feeling.
We called family in for help. There was a sign on a fence post so we called the number. My husband let him know what happened and asked permission for us to drive a little back in the woods to get this deer. After 6 hours, 6 people and a mile search later....we looked in the corn field and saw blood. My husband is running, tracking the blood and yells the deer!!!! The deer tries to get up to run, jon shoots it in the rear...we run up and it’s still breathing and head is moving. He stops! Drops head, its dead! And yes it was mine! I carried the matching rack ;) Wow it’s all over! What an emotional day! My heart never stopped beating that night. I couldn’t sleep. And the night we ate it, I couldn’t stop smiling :)
Since it was broke and taxidermist had to fix it, it was unable to be officially scored or in any books. Rough score was typ. 172 non typ 182, 15 pointer!! Officially scored or not, that’s a whitetail deer of a lifetime for me, and the best day ever!
