Creating Your Own Water Hole

A good friend of mine has given me permission to hunt his small 36 acre piece of property.  This a great location just on the outskirts of town with lots of large bucks in the area.  This piece has everything I need to attract big bucks - corn/bean fields, a newly planted food plot and of course my Monster Raxx mineral site - everything except water that is.

So besides adding a food plot and mineral location, I decided to add a water hole to the mix with the help of my brother, Dan.  This is all that is needed to create your own water hole without all the heavy equipment.

First thing we did was to find a low spot in the ground where the rain water would run off and keep the hole filled.  Then it was time to dig the hole to place the laundry tub I purchased at the local retail store for only $6.00.  Make sure if you're digging in an area that has some trees that you also bring an axe along to chop out the roots, it also helps to loosen the ground if the area you are working is hard.  Once we got the hole dug we placed the tub in and added small rocks to the bottom of it to keep the dirt settled and also to keep deer from puncturing holes in it if one happens to step inside it.

Once the tub was in place it was time to add the water which we carried in from a local creek.  After filling the tub we replaced the dirt around the tub to finish off the water hole.  This took us a total of 25 minutes to finish.  The deer will be thanking us when the temps hit the upper 80's and 90's this summer and early fall.

The bucks will be thanking you during the rut! Get ready for some awesome trailcam pics and action if you have a stand nearby.

Good work Mike and Dan ! Another good idea is to put a small log across the top in case any small animals fall in they can get out without drowning and stank up the water.

Great article Mike! We also use water plots at our property up north and it works great to keep the deer local!

After this week with the heat index over 100 degrees plus, the deer are sure going to love you for putting in the water hole.

Great work guys, I did the same thing earlier this year. It's just one more thing to help out the wildlife, and also increasing your opportunities come Fall.
