Where I Like To Set My Trail Cameras
Where I Like To Set My Trail Cameras
Well July is upon us and it's time to think about getting your trail cameras out and taking inventory, unless you’re a trail camera nut like me that has had them out all year. Now the bucks are really starting to show us what they will look like come fall and the does are out and about and fawns are cute as can be.
One thing to keep in mind when placing your trail cameras is the sun, try to avoid facing your cameras East or West as the rising and setting sun can really wreck a great photo opportunity. I find that my DLC Covert cameras work best when placed 10-15 feet from my target. This may take some adjustment as all trail cameras and flash or IR ranges are different.
My "hotspots" right now are my Monster Raxx Trophy Mineral sites. I average 50 pictures a day in these areas. Now a Monster Raxx mineral site that is holding water and is on the edge of a clover plot will up that number to 100 pictures a day (3 shot burst 1 minute delay). Next on my list of places to hang a trail camera would be a water source. In the heat of summer all critters need water. It can be a small water hole or a pond but these areas will also see heavy traffic and reflections in water make for some really cool pictures.
I know it's only July but if you can find an active scrape either from last year or even make a mock scrape you can get some really great shots of bucks or does scent checking licking branches. Not all scrapes are active year round but some are, and if you can find one you will be amazed at the traffic around it. Another good spot right now would be an alfalfa field edge, if you have time to scout, watch from a distance and see where the bachelor buck groups are entering the field and spending most of their time and place a camera there. You can also up your odds by spraying some Monster Raxx Whitetail Magnet on the alfalfa in front of your camera the deer will spend more time there for sure. It's not quite time for bean fields yet but by month’s end those should be warming up also.
So stock upon batteries and dust of those cameras and start taking inventory of what's roaming the woods that you hunt and don't forget to share your pictures with us for our trail camera photo contest. I know all of us trail camera nuts here at Monster Raxx love to see all the pictures.
