FOOLING THE NOSE OF A WHITETAIL DEER
FOOLING THE NOSE OF A WHITETAIL DEER
In the last two decades many hunters have tried to fool the nose of a whitetail deer. Buying countless products, which claim to hide you from a whitetail’s greatest defense. A person could go into a hunting store and walk out with a shopping cart full of products just to fool a whitetails nose. These items range from as simple as a bottle of skunk urine to as advanced as an Ozone scent elimination machine.
Like most things we do, hunting has evolved with technology. In years past you could drive past some one’s house and know who was a deer hunter without ever talking to them. You could tell just by seeing their blaze orange hunting suit hanging on a clothes line. Now most hunters wash their outfits in special scent free laundry detergent then dry their clothes with a fresh earth scent dryer sheet, only to put it in a scent free bag or tote immediately from the dryer.
Even some types of clothes we wear while hunting are supposed to be made to eliminate our human odor. This is a topic that causes a lot of debate whether it works or not. There does not seem to be any middle ground on this subject. Either a hunter strongly believes scent free clothes work or they do not.
Some hunters have gone as far as even changing their diets. It is thought that if you eliminate any foods with strong odors the deer will not be able to smell you. I have even read about the benefits of not eating red meat during the hunting season. I know a few people that take pills like Triple Chlorophyll that are supposed to eliminate odors as well.
Over the years like most hunters, I have tried a lot of products to see if they could help me fool a whitetail’s nose. I have found a few products that I really like, and have helped me get away from being detected even when a deer has been down wind. My favorite laundry detergents are from Scent Blocker and Seemz Technologies. For cover scent I really like Monster Raxx Anytime Acorns to spray around me while in stand. The cover scents I like most for spraying on my clothes are from Scent Blocker, Tink’s and Seemz Technologies.
The first step I believe to being successful in fooling a deer’s nose is to wash your clothes in scent free laundry detergent at least 2 months before the hunting season begins, and I am talking about all of your clothes, not just your hunting outfits. Two things that I believe are over looked the most are under wear and bath towels. What is the point of going through all of this work, only get out of the shower and dry off with a bath towel that has been washed in regular laundry detergent and probably some sort of fabric softener.
I use a scent free dryer sheet for my every day clothes and an earth scented dryer sheet for my hunting outfits. When the dryer stops I immediately take my hunting clothes out and store them in a scent free bag or tote. In every scent free bag and tote I also add an earth scented dryer sheet.
I have worn scent elimination clothing by Scent Blocker and Scent Lok. Can I guarantee that they eliminate all of my human scent, not 100 percent I can’t. But I can tell you, I have been winded by deer far less than before I started using them. A major factor I believe is because I rewash after each use. The other benefit of these garments in my opinion is they are far superior in quality, comfort, and silence. My preference is the products made by Scent Blocker, for comfort and I prefer the Lost Camo pattern.
When it comes to food, for me it is the spicier the better. This is an area that I could improve on staying scent free. I do try to cut down on the amount of garlic and hot sauce I use during hunting season, but not as much as I probably should. Another thing I do is take a Triple Chlorophyll pill each day, which is supposed to help eliminate human odors.
The best way to fool a whitetail’s nose is to always play the wind. But when that buck of a life time walks in from an unexpected direction, and you are extremely cautious of staying scent free, I believe you will still have an opportunity for success. Good luck this upcoming deer season, and always hunt safe.
